Millitanment Inc.

Definition: "War packaged for pleasurably consumption"

Thesis: The government uses music, movies, commercials, and all other sorts of media in order to get people to back the war.

Fact: 1)A Marin Corp Coronal thought it would be a good idea to have Iraqi people tare down the statue of Sadam. 2)This war is easy to watch on the couch with a bag of chips. 3)the first step of a "clean war" is to dehumanize the images of the war. 4) future bomb sites are target of opportunity. 5)Falling bombs are called minor annoyances

Brain: Reptilian, the bombs, watching and hearing them explode. Neocortex, the stats and trivia of Techo-Fetishism. Limbic, watching the footage of the war can hit all sorts of emotions.

Principals: Value Message, the media tells you who is good and who is bad. Reality Construction, this film is one sided. Individual Meaning, this would have a different meaning and internal response for almost anyone. Emotional Transfer, i feel this movie is trying to tap into, guilt, betrayal, and anger.

Trends: Aesthetic Shift, this film is as powerful as it is because of all the sources used. Epistemological Shift, this film is powerful because they show us what has been filtered. What we have only been able to read about. Political Shift, they have taken regulated media and (re)regulated it. Discursive Shift, they have taken the first person news report(er) witch is "objective". and made it Objective in the way the critique it.

Persuasion: Testimonial, there are tons of testimonials in this film. Big Lie or Diversion, the way the media gives us the news. Beautiful People, the news anchors. Repetition, they keep going back to the same clips and playing them again. Bandwagon, the pro-wars songs are meant to make you feel like everyone is doing it. Fear/Defensive Nationalism, the film is pact to the rim with this technique. Group Dynamics, "My Fellow Americans"

1. What was the most difficult part in making this video?
We had a great team and everyone brought something to the table. If I had to decide what the most difficult thing with this video was I would have to say trying to incorporate six different ways Champlain is being green.

2. Other than finishing it, what was the most rewarding moment in making this video? I found presenting it in class was the most rewarding. Particularly when someone in the class room said it took "big kahonas" to present this film the way we did, acting a scene rather then doing it documentary style.

3. Discuss 3 specific things you learned about film production and/or group process in making this video. 1) The five second rule, and the more I look for it the more i see it every were .2) Don't try to put the video quality of a flip-cam up against Hollywood. 3)That your idea is not always the best. you need to take everyones ideas into account.

4.Discuss 3 specific things you learned about Champlain College and/or the "Sustain Champlain" project you did not know about before completing this project
Before we started I did not know anything about Sustain Champlain. Everything I've learned about Sustain Champlain has opened my eyes. the green roof I thought looked cool helps with heating and air conditioning bills. The compost goes full circle and ends up back at Champlain as potting soil. And for bikers not only do we have bike racks all over campus, but we also have a shower facility.

The Perfect Marriage

I started using Google Reader (an RSS feed) about a month ago. I did not like it I don’t fallow a lot of blogs so it was just as easy for me, to go to blogger and check the blogs there. STOP THE PRESSES!!! I just started my Google Alerts I love it! Everything I’m into from music and movies to Champlain College and local bars will be e-mailed right to me. The only problem is that I don’t use my yahoo e-mail account and I can’t have the alerts sent to my Champlain account. But what I can do is have my Google Alerts, sent to my Google Reader and now that I have more than one or two blogs being sent to my RSS I enjoy going to it. These two Web 2.0 tools working together is a perfect marriage.

Media Meditation 4

Media Meditation #4

Thesis: Wear a condom.

Brain: Limbic, the music in the back ground is boring and sounds like a super market. Reptilian, the kid yelling(Flight). Neocortex, this commercial makes you think if having kids is a good idea.

“Facts”: 1 Children are loud. 2 children cause a scene when they don’t get what they want. 3 Use Condoms. 4 you can’t control children. 5 Your life is over once you have kids.

Trend: Epistemological Shift, seeing the child throw a temper tantrum is much more effective then reading about it. Political Shift, this commercial was band for TV. Personal Shift, I took this commercial for you tube and put it on Blogger.

Principles: Reality Construction/Trade offs, this commercial would make you think having a kid is the end of the world. Value Message, wear a condom. Individual Meaning, Some people would find this Offensive (this commercial was band).

Persuasive Techniques: Big Lie, Children will ruin your life. Simple Solution, wear a condom. Fear, Having Children. Plain folks. Repetition “I want those sweets”

Media Meditation 3, Bud Light

Thesis: Bud Light is worth it. Whatever the cost

Five Facts:1 Bears like beer. 2 Bud Light is refreshingly smooth.3 Bud Light is always worth it. 4 Dave's still got it. 5 Bears can run down hill

Brain: 1 The bear roaring hit the reptilian brain, fight or flight.
2 The ominous music hits the limbic brain. 3 the calm music makes you feel like everything is gonna be all right when guy one gives the bear a bud light, limbic brain. The text at the end of the commercial "Always Worth It" hits the neocortex.

Principles: Reality Construction/Trade offs:Bud Light will not stop a bear. Emotional Transfer:The emotions you go though are FEAR of the bear, RE LEAF when the bear gets a Bud Light, Humor when Dave runs by and grabs the Bud Light. Production Techniques: 23 different camera angles, the commercial was well lit. It was edited for a fast pace. the most memorable sound effect is the bottle opening.

Trends: Epistemological Shift: This commercial uses almost only images, until the second to last frame where they write "Always worth it". Technological Shift: with this commercial being in digital form it makes it easy to cut to a particular part of the clip to look for whatever it is you are looking for, as opposed to the analog VHS's we used to have were "rewinding" was a pain and you cold not really see ware you where in the film.Personal Shift: This clip was mass-media when it was first aired on television as a commercial, now it is personal. I found it on You Tube and embedded it on Blogger.

Persuasive: Big Lie, Bud Light will not stop a bear. Bribery, the guy tried to bribe the bear with a Bud Light. Simple Solution, this bud light sill stop the bear. Humor, when Dave runs past and grabs the Bud Light i found it funny. Testimonial, "refreshingly smooth Bud Light always worth it". Plain Folks, the two friends. Nostalgia, hiking with friends. Timing, the key component in this clip was humor and with any joke timing in crustal.

(RE) Media Mid-Term

Media Mid-Term
Spring 2010,

Thesis+4; Tecnology can save us if we use it in the right ways, the trouble is we tend to use it for our fun web 2.0 applications, like facebook, twitter and, youtube

5 Facts+8; I spend hundreds of dollars on textbooks I never read. Over one billion people make less then one dollar a day. I will read 8 books this year. I have to be a multitasked. Laptops cost more then most people make in a year.

Triune Brain+8; Neocortex-the text in the beginning of the film. Limbic-the music makes you feel unsure. Limbic- the music change makes you fell a faster pace. Neocortex- though out the entire video we use the neocortex to read the signs.

Shifts+2; Analog-Digital, Individual-Mass Media, Word-Image

Trends+0; convergence, Images,

Persuasive Techniques +8; Fear- with all the hardship that the students go though. Big Lie- this video was made at a big university. Race Card- there were only white
people in this film. Nostalgia, seeing all the writing on the desks made me think of high school. Straw Man- saying that technology can save us and then showing all the ways we miss treat it.

If I could take my mid-term over I would redo the fallowing sections:

Thesis, Shift, Trends. And this is how I would do it

Thesis; “Some here suggested that technology can save us… Some have suggested technology alone can save us.”

Shifts; Word-Image the film uses images of words. Mass-Personal this felt personal the first time I watched it, buy the more I watch it the more I realize it is also mass

Trends; production techniques, the way they filmed this made you feel like you are in the class room like you are one of the students. Individual meaning, depending on the school you go to your experience may be different. Value message, this clip is full of valued messages about how technology helps and distracts us.
